Images of Virginia

Today was moving day for us and we are now in Richmond, VA. It was really hard leaving our beautiful surroundings in Newport News, VA. We had such a good time there. Of course, we know that Richmond will be fabulous, too, so we are looking forward to touring the area. But we perked up after talking with Michelle and reconnecting with long time friend, Ken, who lives near DC and is making big plans for our visit there. Also, we have been getting such lovely feedback regarding the blog so it is all good.
Because there was no touring today, I have decided to share some additional photos of the Historic Triangle: Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown, plus one more from Norfolk. It is a challenge to select photos to share. With the digital camera, I usually take a minimum of 100 pictures a day, sometimes up to 300, depending on our location. I love having a record of where we have been and what we have seen. I have dreams of sharing these, especially the historical areas, with school children eventually. Once a teacher, always a teacher, I guess.
This photo is of the interpreter, who played John Rolfe. I don't know who he is but he is an excellent historian, actor and educator. He really made being at the Jamestown anniversary celebration special.
This is a photo from Williamsburg and the reenactment of the Govenor's announcement that he was dissolving the House of Burgesses. It was a beautiful Spring day in Williamsburg. We were able to spend three days there and plan to bring our grandchildren back there some day. What a wonderful way to learn, see, hear and feel our country's history.
While I have a draft prepared, I have not yet published a blog about Yorktown. There is such a lot of history regarding Yorktown. In October 2006, the country will be celebrating the 225th anniversary of the Britsh surrender at Yorktown, thus ending the Revolutionary War. I hope to finish Yorktown soon so look for it.
This photo is from the Yorktown Victory Center with one of the interpreters, who is demonstrating how to fire a rifle. Now this is a lady of a certain age and I would not want to tangle with her. She's a pretty good shot. In the background, you can see a bit of the York River, where the French were able to blockcade the British ships from reaching General Cornwallis and his troops, thus preventing the re-supply of the British troops and was the turning point of the war.
In a previous blog, I shared that Norfolk is sponsoring a Mermaid exhibit. I thought I should share this photo of Poseiden, who guards the entrance to the Hampton Roads Naval Museum. I guess I have a Poseiden theme going here, after the movie and all. Posted by Picasa
