Long Island Views

Today was a laid back day during which we planned our itinerary through 4th of July. This is the first time that we have done any advanced planning, which may be a surprise, given the nature of our undertaking. But not planning has been a boon for us. We have stumbled upon great moments. Yes, we may have missed some, too, but we don't know that we did. Part of the adventure is not being tied to any particular plan so that we are free to move or stay at will.
Our travels today took us to South Fork of Long Island, where the rich and famous play. We have decided that this is the Lake Geneva/Door County of New York. Lots of wineries, farms and little towns with vast tracts of land populated by grand estates.
The photo above is the closest that we got to the mansions along the Atlantic Ocean, many of which have private tennis courts and swimming pools, as well as fantastic landscaping.
Deep sea fishing is a big economic driver in this area. Behind this sand dune is a fleet of commercial fishing boats in Great Peconic Bay.

We experienced fine dining at the Shady Lady Inn and Steakhouse in Greenport. The grounds were beautifully landscaped including statuary-very Victorian bordering on the bordello-style but great food and service. We have no idea the cost of staying here in one of their eight suites, but it would be great fun for a long weekend.

As we were driving through Greenport, we spotted this lawn ornament. As we were driving toward it, Mel thought it was a lobster, but this side view reveals a mermaid. Whatever it is, it is interesting.
